I’ve been busy and at work for the last 12 weeks or so on many different things. As I am still a college student, my sculpture projects have held up a significant portion of my time.
The first I’d like to present is one that I devoted most of my time to: The Iron Cross. The Iron Cross is my first figure study and first journey into the realm of sculpting and capturing the human body.

The Iron Cross is one of the most well known gymnastics strength poses. Conceptually, the iron cross exemplifies the athlete’s victory over specific muscular disadvantages. My interest came from the tension required to suspend a body isometrically in the air against the will of gravity and because of this, it is only a “study;” hardly a finished piece.

Given the restrictions placed on me through my studio classes and project deadlines, I was unable to proceed and work on facial structures or specific details. Although this piece is broken and deformed (thanks to an iron pour on a cold day) I have been forced to mold off of this piece and start again. A final cast will more than likely be in bronze.
Currently I am exploring the world of lifesize metal casting. The focus for this project is, in fact, Parkour related. Many thanks goes out to Jereme Sanders from Texas for taking time to get me some reference photos!

Progress on this piece has begun starting with the molds. To save me an immense amount of fabrication time on this piece I have decided to use my own body as the model for my molds. I expect to have most of my molds done by around February.

During this time I will also be reworking my previous studies into finished pieces (hopefully).
